Denver International Airport (DEN)

Devil’s Thumb Ranch is located 75 miles west of Denver and minutes from Winter Park.

The California Zephyr runs daily from Union Station, in downtown Denver, to Winter Park. The train takes about 2.5 hours. See Amtrack.com for tickets. To get to Union Station from the Denver Airport, you can Uber or catch the University of Colorado A Line (37 minutes - you can purchase your ticket at the kiosks there).

Altitude Tips

 

Colorado is breathtaking.
We mean it - it could literally take your breath away!

Devil’s Thumb Ranch is located over 8,000 feet above sea level. The altitude is very high and mountain weather can be extreme and unpredictable.
Altitude sickness can hit anyone, regardless of physical condition or age. The most common symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, and unrestful sleep. It’s a whole different world up in the mountains, so to ensure you’ll have the best experience possible, we’ve put together some information to keep you healthy and happy:

  • Stay properly hydrated. Acclimatization is often accompanied by fluid loss, so you need to drink lots of fluids to remain properly hydrated (at least 3 to 4 quarts per day). Consider drinking more water than usual beginning 36 to 48 hours before arriving at altitude to help prevent symptoms.

  • Be careful with tobacco and alcohol during acclimation, which can also lead to dehydration.

  • Purchase oxygen canisters to help supplement the lack of oxygen from one of the suppliers below:

  • Light activity during the day will encourage your body to breath deeply, helping to counteract the symptoms of altitude sickness and get more oxygen into your bloodstream. Get plenty of rest at night, but avoid taking a nap if you can - respiration decreases during sleep, which can exacerbate symptoms.
